The first round of the 2016/2017 VELUX EHF Champions League is already behind us, and it’s been quite an interesting and action-packed week. Providing 6 matches in two single days, SEHA – Gazprom league members have shown the obvious quality that South-East European handball possesses.

The only SEHA league representative in group A, Telekom Veszprem, faced  SG Flensburg-Handewitt on Saturday in their EHFCL season-opener. Everything looked in favor of Veszprem win, especially having gone with 3 goal advantage on a break, but Flensburg stepped up their game in the next half tying the result in the very last minute to 24:24.

On Saturday, Meshkov Brest hosted the actual champions of EHF Champions League, Vive Tauron Kielce, against whom Meshkov showed they know how to compete with the best. The Belarussians took a 3-goal advantage after the first 30 minutes, but Kielce pushed harder in the next half and completely turned over the result to 24:29 in the end.

PPD Zagreb travelled to Celje for the famous Balkan ‘el Clasico’ on Saturday. Extremely motivated to open the Champions League with a win in front of their fans, Celje PL successfully closed the match on the home court grabbing the first two points with a 30:28 win.

Macedonian champions Vardar continued their winning strike and transferred their 100% effect to Champions League taking the points from IFK Kristianstad on Sunday. The Swedish host lost to SEHA League vice champions by 23:28.

After reaching the first points in the regional handball league, Metalurg Skopje kept walking the path of success. They celebrated in their first Champions League match of the season against Elverum Handball (18:17) on Sunday.

Tatran Presov were a few steps away from a sensation after the undecided first half (14:14), but the French experience shown in the second half was too hard to outplay. Montepellier HB defeated Tatran with the result of 28:23 after 60 minutes of the match played in France.
