SEHA December recap

December is often people’s favorite month of the year. Despite of Christmas and winter holidays, SEHA- Gazprom League entered the crucial period of the season. The schedule was tight, we had many matches, including some of the most interesting finishes of the season. We are bringing you a short recap of what was happening on and off the court, this December.

We had 20 matches, which were being played every couple of days. Some players and goalkeepers stood out with amazing performances, scoring loads of goals or producing many great saves. Perhaps the best performance came at the start of December, when Ivan Pesic produced 17 memorable saves. In the first SEHA December derby Meshkov defeated PPD Zagreb in a really close game. That 9th Round brought us 2 draws- Mirkovic and Klec scored the crucial goals for Dinamo and Gorenje against Nexe and Tatran, earning their respective teams a big point.

The next round gave us a repeat of the matches from the spectacular first round. Meshkov managed to get revenge against Tatran, but other results were quite similar to the ones in Round One. Nexe gave PPD Zagreb a hard time, but the Croatian champions recorded a close win in Nasice. The Skopje derby saw Metalurg play really well in the first half, but ultimately falling to Dibirov and Vardar. The most intense and interesting match was our Derby of the Round- Dinamo against Vojvodina. It looked like the Serbian champions are running away with it, but the hosts’ strong second half ensured them their second win against Vojvodina this season. Bruno Butorac had 12 assists in a loss against Meshkov who were led by Petar Djordjic’s 9 goals.

Eleventh round might later prove to be crucial, as Celje PL defeated Meshkov in Brest in that round’s derby. Mackovsek had a big game to lead the Slovenian champions to an important victory with 9 goals and 10 assists. On top of that, Tatran Presov could not beat PPD Zagreb for the second time this season, as they lost 32:26, just like they did to Meshkov in the previous round. Zrnic’s 11 goal were not enough, as Milan Jovanovic scored 9 to lead Vojvodina to their second win of the season. Vardar extended their winning streak with Maqueda and Cindric both scoring 7 goals against Gorenje

Round Twelve saw Celje PL extend their unbeaten run to seven games. The Slovenian champions achieved another important victoy, as they best Tatran. Serbian teams Vojvodina and Dinamo recorded two losses. Vojvodina lost to PPD Zagreb in Varazdin Arena, and Dinamo came close, but fell to Gorenje in a black and yellow matchup. Nexe recorded their fourth draw of the season, splitting points with Metalurg.

Some amazing things were happening off the court as well. We gave out more prizes and match tickets for our contest participants. Metalurg and Vardar joined forces together and donated all the match earnings to a young student Borce who is currently struggling with health. Nexe, Tatran, Vardar and Metalurg organized an action in which they gifted around 800 books to the Croatian National Library in Nasice.

We also found out the winner of our Best Handball Fan contest. Nemanja Malicanin from Pancevo was the most creative fan in the Third Round and won 2 all-inclusive tickets for the Final 4 in May 2018. The players thought his drawing of his 10 favorite players from 10 different SEHA teams was the best one of the bunch. Congratulations, once again to Nemanja!
