Che viva Espana was resounding in the stands of Arena Zagreb, after the Hispanos defeated Sweden in the big and unexpected final of the EURO. Denmark, Sweden, France, Croatia and everyone else who saw the big event, took a bow to Jordi Ribera’s players. The fantastic Spaniards wrote a new story of handball history beating Sweden, after they were vice-champions 4 times!
Mutual competition, shouting, whistling, sounds of clapping and the ball bouncing on the floor, looking left and right, up and down were all the things happening on the court and in the stands for 60 minutes. Then, the Croatian referees blew their whistles to end the match and fiesta started. The Spanish players ran over to each other for hugs, laughing with tears in their eyes, after they achieved a dream they had since they were kids. You could recognize how much that European gold meant to them, how much effort, work and will was invested in this magnificent success.
It was beautiful to see spectators in Arena Zagreb that celebrated together with the Spanish fans. Waves in the stands, golden confetti, a rapsody of fireworks and fans’ hugs whose home were the Arenas in Split, Porec, Varazdin and Zagreb in these 2 and a half weeks. It proves that handball united different generations and the fans from all over world into a big family.
Emotions and tingling that the fans were feeling during the medal ceremony are an undescribeable feeling that they get to keep forever. The fans were the 8th player, they were a piece of a magnificent story about a European championship, once again proving they truly love handball and that there is no fear about the future!
