Croatia and Spain are 2022 IHF Youth Beach Handball World Championship winners

The 2022 IHF Men’s and Women’s Youth (U18) Beach Handball World Championships were held from 14 to 19 June in Heraklion Greece. The second-ever IHF Youth Beach Handball World Championship has its winners, and it’s Croatia in Men’s and Spain in Women’s category. 

After six days of many thrilling matches of 32 youth teams, the IHF Men’s and Women’s Youth (U18) Beach Handball World Championship is over. The teams in both competitions were allocated in four groups, from which the first three got through to the main round. In the main round, two groups of six teams each battled it out to finish in the top four of their groups to ensure a quarter-final spot which was played on Saturday (18 June).

In men’s category France, Germany, Croatia, Ukraine, Brazil, Spain, Iran and Argentina played the quarter-finals, but only four best teams made it to the semis and those were Croatia, France, Brazil and Iran.

In women’s competition quarter-final was reserved for Hungary, France, Brazil, Netherlands, Spain, Argentina, Poland and Germany. Spot in the semi-finals secured Hungary, Netherlands, Poland and Spain.

Final day at sandy courts of Heraklion was full of action in both competitions. In Men’s competition, Croatia was set to play Brazil in the finals, while France played Iran in a bronze medal match. Islamic Republic of Iran was more successfull, and with a win (2:0) secured the bronze in Greece. The final match of the men’s competition was tense. Croatia won the first set (18:19), and the second set went to Brazil (16:12). The match ended in a penalty shootouts which ended well for Croatia, because it made them the World Champions.

Women competition was not any less tense, because Hungary and Poland played the bronze medal match, while Netherlands and Spain were set to clash in the finals. Poland was better, and after a penalty shootout ended with a bronze medal around their neck. Final match of the women’s competition ended in a penalty shootout as well, and Spain were crowned as champions.

After the Youth’s competition, Heraklion will host 2022 IHF Men’s and Women’s Beach Handball World Championship in senior category from 21 to 26 June. Stay tuned, follow IHF social media and watch matches live here.
